Music Review: Kid Cudi “Man In The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager”

Kid Cudi is relatively “new” to the mainstream. His break out album dropped last year (Man In The Moon: The End Of Day) and had some chart toppers with “Day N Nite (Nightmare)” and “Simple As…” However I didn’t know who he was really until a friend introduced me to his stuff. There were more tracks from that album that kinda stuck with me, but overall, it didn’t do much for me.

Cudi’s second major release “Man In The Moon II: The Legend Of Mr. Rager” came quick on the heels of the previous album. Mr. Rager has the same basic feel of the first album but cut out a bit of the melodrama that was introduced via spoken word (delivered from Common) after several tracks. In my opinion it is the better album.

End of Day’s songs sounded, to me anyways, all about the same. The beats changed but Cudi’s delivery of the lines all seemed to flow at the same tempo. Not that they were bad rhymes or anything but they just seemed to all blend together. Mr. Rager shows that Cudi can in fact change up his style and mix speed of delivery along with some deeper rhymes. This album much like the first is a very mellow album. Most of the track are very slow and chill, with a couple exceptions. One thing that bothers me about Kid Cudi, and this is probably more of a personal gripe than anything, is his over abundance of lyrics about how he uses drugs, parties, and what not. That’s great, smoke weed, do your thing, but I don’t care about it. You’re not Cypress Hill and never will be, let it go. While I realize this is just the way he is (much like Kanye and his attitude) it just gets a bit old after a while.

Favorite tracks so far: Mr. Rager, Scott Mescudi Vs. The World, and The Mood.
